RE: Potential Lab Gotcha

Something I've been thinking about lately which, until now, I haven't really
decided whether it would be useful on the lab as a general practice. Perhaps
it is my sense that the labs wouldn't include something so devious as
"unknown" services existing on the network.

Perhaps debug ip packet would be a good tool to use in cases like these and
debug ntp packet as well for more specific scenarios. In this case, perhaps
there might be some sort of NTP server or broadcast server out there that we
could discover by using these tools. I use debug ip packet for problems I
know I'm having but haven't thought about just using it to see if there is
something I don't know about.

I begin to think of other things that could drive you crazy if you don't
discover them. My tendancy would be to think that if it isn't specifically
stated to configure X as the time source then it isn't really required and
perhaps the proctors would just be looking for proper configuration. That
would be a mistake. Maybe that's true but maybe it isn't. Best to ask the
question and consider all of the potential alternatives out there. Those of
you that have taken the lab will know whether I'm off base or not but
critical thinking about possibilities I suspect is half the battle.

I hadn't considered the problem of time-dependant scenarios but you can bet
I have now.

Thanks for the good tips.

I believe it depends on the platform. Some have a hardware clock,

But if the router is rebooted then the clock settings will be lost!!!

Correct me if I'm wrong

Hey Marvin,

Excellent point. That's something I probably wouldn't have thought of
myself. Can you think of any other features that also require the clock to
be?
