Hi Paul,
Q.1) what are difference between Anycast-RP and Auto-rp? Anycast means what?
Anycast is used for redundancy: several RPs with the same loopback IP
address process join and register messages for the closer hosts. Auto-RP is
a different feature, which allows for dynamic assignment of RP-multicast
group.
Q.2) And what is the MSDP, it's the same thing with the anycast rp?
MSDP is originally designed to allow RPs from different ASs to communicate,
but it has another application: Anycast.
Q.3) when we configure for the auto-rp in PIM-SM, it requires the below
commands.
- why we use the "ip pim sparse-dense-mode" though we want to run the PIM-SM
with auto-rp?
224.0.0.39 and 224.0.0.40 are groups used by PIM. If you use sparse-mode,
auto-rp would not work since the RP is not known until PIM traffic is sent,
but how to send it if we do not know the RP...
- do we have to put the "ip pim accept-rp auto-rp" as well?
No. This is only to define priorities between static and dynamic RP
assignments.
There are great explanations for this in the Doc CD.
Cheers,
Ato.

Subject: anycast rp and auto-rp
HI all,
could I make a few questions regarding the ip multicast on the Cat6500.
Q.1) what are difference between Anycast-RP and Auto-rp? Anycast means what?
Q.2) And what is the MSDP, it's the same thing with the anycast rp?
Q.3) when we configure for the auto-rp in PIM-SM, it requires the below
commands.
- why we use the "ip pim sparse-dense-mode" though we want to run the PIM-SM
with auto-rp?
- do we have to put the "ip pim accept-rp auto-rp" as well?
!
ip multicast-routing
!
interface eth0
ip address 12.53.10.2 255.255.255.0
ip pim sparse-dense-mode <===== why sparce-dense though we configure just
sparse-mode for the static RP. ! ip pim accept-rp auto-rp <===== does it
really need? ip pim send-rp-announce ip pim send-rp-discovery !
Thanks for your comment.
Paul.
