This is simply not true if the IP phone is a Cisco IP Phone. There is a
voice vlan configuration at interface level that will separate the voice
traffic from data traffic.

I understand that configuring the port connecting to an IP Phone for
trunking will work as well but saying it needs to be trunked is false
becasue it does not need to be if the IP Phone is Cisco IP Phone, if the IP
Phone is non-Cisco then it NEEDS to be trunked as non-Cisco does not use CDP
protocol.
If I misunderstand the question then correct me.
