Brian,

I am chastened and I stand (somewhat) corrected. I cannot reproduce the
problem on a friend's cat3550 running Version 12.1(13)EA1a. I do note
that a 'y' answer to the first prompt is undesired, but you only get in
trouble if you aren't paying attention.

CAT1#del vlan.dat
Delete filename [vlan.dat]? y
Delete flash:y? [confirm]
%Error deleting flash:y (No such file or directory)
CAT1#

        The vlan database is a file stored in flash. The dir output I
showed illustrates that the file was removed from the flash. Do you
have multiple switches connected? It could be that you are deleting the
database on one switch, reloading it, and the switch is then relearning
about the VLANs through VTP. If you have multiple switches connected
shut the trunk links down and try it out. If you're still having issues
with this, it may possibly be version dependent. What version are you
running?
