Still not completely true.

The SMI now supports Connected, Static, and Rip v1/2 routing.

Ken - FYI - Older versions of SMI only supported layer 2. Now some
consider it a layer 2.5 switch. Whatever floats your boat. :)

3550-SMI - L2 and limited L3 (static and connected routes only)
3550-EMI - L2 and full L3 features.
