Roger,
If you post a 'show ver' I can tell you if the setting of the config
register is necessary. I really depends on how your flash comes up. If it
comes up in read only mode or read-write mode. If you come up to read/write
with the config-register set to the default (0x2102) then you have no need
to set the config-register to 0x2101.
Remember all you are doing by changing the config register is telling the
router to boot using RX Boot mode (Router(Boot)#)
And it doesn't access the flash on startup allowing access to that file
system for erasing / writing (upgrading).
The other key part of the show ver is if you have 16 megs of flash and that
they show up as one flash partition.
****** Output of the Show ver ************
cisco 2500 (68030) processor (revision N) with 6144K/2048K bytes of memory.
Processor board ID 08317545, with hardware revision 00000001
Bridging software.
X.25 software, Version 2.0, NET2, BFE and GOSIP compliant.
Basic Rate ISDN software, Version 1.0.
1 Ethernet/IEEE 802.3 interface(s)
2 Serial network interface(s)
1 ISDN Basic Rate interface(s)
32K bytes of non-volatile configuration memory.
8192K bytes of processor board System flash (Read ONLY)
***** Output of the Show ver *************
Notice the last line "8192K bytes of processor board System flash (Read
ONLY)"
That read ONLY will stop us from upgrading the IOS on this router.
Yes XMODEM will work if we break to ROMMON but that is very slow and if you
don't have enough memory you may have to start all over again. Big waste of
time if you don't have enough memory.
thanks,
Lee

Tried X-modem, the only thing I haven't tried yet is changing the config
registers, I'll try doing that tonight. I have spent at least 8 hours doing
this instead of studying and has become frustrating. Thanks for everyone's
help.

My config registers are 0x2102 on all 7 of my routers with 16 flash and
14336K/2048K of memory. What am I doing wrong?
Tried 12.2 IP, Ip plus, and E plus
Can not load on
4 2501's
2 2503's
1 2520
Tried tftp with pumpkin, solarwinds, and another router. Even tried xmodem.

Roger,
I'm sure it's possible. My 2501 has been running 12.2 (17) E Plus for a
month with no problems.
I also use Pumpkin as TFTP server.

That sucks!!!
Not so good news 7 out of 11 of my rack routers are unupgradeable. :(
I am currently running 12.1(5)T
According to CCO the 12.2 documentation includes all features up to
12.1(5)T
so hopefully I will be able to do at least 95% of the features.

Its because of the platform. The 2501 is a shared memory router. The
2511
is not. One of the differences is that the 2511 has 2 meg of ram built
in
so when you install a 16 meg Dram chip, you have18 meg total, 2 meg of
iomem and 16 to use for other stuff. On the 2501, you only have 16 meg
total, so the router takes it 2 meg for iomem and your left with 14 meg.
There is no way you can load anything higher on the 2501 router that you
have. You basically have a hardware enforced limit of 14 meg for the
file
size it can store. Even then you'd be pushing it to get a 14 meg file
to
load. Sorry.
The good news is the only shared platforms in the 2500 series where
2501,
2502, 2503, 2504, 2520, 2521, 2522, and 2523. Just stay away from those
in
the future. You might try ios 12.1 enterprise plus ver 12.1.3b
c2500-js-l.121-3b.bin its only 14198428 bytes so you should be able to
load
that one. otherwise 12.1.2b should load, as it is only 14064264.
Good luck
Rob
