I posted the message below a while ago.
Thought I would give an update.
I'm making my third Mikrotik pc as I type this (loading the eight
floppies.)
Going to use it as a SSH server for my rack. Going to SSH to a public
address, then access the rack which a private addresses space.
While the demo license is limited to four primary interfaces; it doesn't
limit things you would want to use in a home lab.
I started out as a PC tech years ago, and have a lot of P1's and PII's
(win95 class) machines hanging around. Been digging around in my parts
pile for all the old 10mbs 3Com Nic cards, which work just fine with the
floppy based install.
Long story short, if you are pc rich and router poor, play with this
Mikrotik software to fill in the gaps.
A linux background helps, but not necessary to use the software and GUI
(winbox configuration client) that comes with it.
I know I sound like a salesman for this pc software, but really I'm just
an engineer who loves free stuff!
BTW, load the advanced-tools, ntp, routing, and security packages. They
seem to be the best for a home lab.

I do a lot on the wireless side of things. Anyway theres a vendor that
sells Linux based wireless routing solutions. I was checking it out for
a new pet project of mine.
Maybe some of you know of Mikrotik.
Long story short, I down loaded the free 8 floppy version of their
software today, threw it on a old P100 computer I had laying around with
two 3com cards, then got the free license from the website.
Guess what, they locked out the wireless module (which makes sense from
their viewpoint), but the OSPF/BGP and VPN modules are enabled in the
free license!!!
For years I wanted a pc based route injector to complement my home lab.
Ive tried to use w2k server, but it never worked well.
Im sure some on the list could use this pc based router with ospf and
bgp enabled in their home labs.
It even has an active link thruput tester, that could be very useful for
QOS testing.
