Hey Ralph,

I feel for you. I had to retake the written which I did last December and
just passed - had I missed one more question, I would have failed. I had
heard that the new written was harder than the one I original took and
easily passed but I was amazed at how difficult they made it.

To prepare, among other things, I purchased a package of practice questions
on ebay for about $20.00. The questions in that package showed me I had
better really know how to decode t/r rif's. I also needed to get very
strong on switching and understand all the new features that are available
on todays Catalyst running the lastest code. Also, you better thoroughly
know things like Translational bridging, IRB, and maybe source-route
bridging. I'm not sure about the last one but if it's still on the list of
topics on cisco's web site, make sure you know it very well.

This is all in addition to all the usual routing stuff, ospf, eigrp, BGP,
etc, etc. I also remember studying multicast, igmp, cgmp, and even inter
domain multicast - there's alot of good material on the cisco web site
regarding interdomain multicast.

Also, make sure you know the details of TCP and what all the fields in the
header do and how they work. Same for IP.

Know the details of password recovery, router password security, the config
register, and general router management and file management. I'm not
positive, but I think you also need to know snmp and rmon - what they do and
how they work.

Make sure you also know your layer 2 protocols, ATM, F/R, ISDN and QOS stuff
for both layer 2 and layer 3.

There's probably more stuff, but I can't think of it at the moment.

I'm sorry you didn't pass but as you now know that test is tough - prepare
for it with a great deal of respect. If there's any gap in your knowledge
Cisco will find it and if that gap is too big, you won't pass.

Study hard and best of luck, dt
