For 3550 and 2950EI as well as 6500/4500 you should not configure a trunk,
the switch will see the phone via CDP and your voice vlan configuration
and automatically trunk even if you've set the port to access mode. For
XL switches and standard 2950 you'll need to manually configure a trunk.

Here's my 3550 IP telephone config:

int fa0/1
switch access vlan 10
switch mode access
switch voice vlan 100
mls qos trust device cisco-phone
mls qos trust cos
mls qos monitor dscp 0 26 46
spann portf
priority-queue out
wrr-queue...
bla bla bla

By configuring it as an access port rather than a trunk you set it up so
that ONLY a cisco phone that has announced itself via CDP can create a
trunk and/or mark their own CoS values. More secure.
