I've tweaked the "keepalive' to on, with no apparent difference in speed
from remote clients. The local access improved significantly, although I
doubt it was from the tweaked settings. It may have been from the 1 Gb RAM
I added.
Correction to my earlier post. My server did not have 2 GB RAM, but rather
1 Gb RAM. When I added another 1 GB RAM, the local access performance was
significantly improved. I suspect it may benefit from another 1 Gb RAM. I
noticed faster performance on the machine with more RAM although the Dual
CPUs were of lesser speeds (700 Mhz compared to 900 Mhz). It appears Java
likes more RAM rather than CPU speeds. (sigh...)

Has anyone else tweaked Apache's httpd.conf file to achieve
a faster Ciscoworks? I noticed that a default CW install
has Apache sending "Pragma: no-cache" with each doc.
Wondering if that prevents the java applets from being
cached. Also wondering about HostnameLookups being on.
Also, I see what seems like alot of Cisco specific
settings towards the bottom of the file including
"KeepAlive Off" I wonder if that conflicts with the
other Keepalive earlier in the file. Anyone have
insights? THANKS!

Joseph,
Have run into this before, but only on remote clients. Running
CiscoWorks
from the server worked fine. Try the following:
Problem:
========
It has been seen that Ciscoworks when installed on certain hardware, has
a very slow response when it tried to be accessed remotely.
NOTE: It responds _fine_ when you log in locally on the box.
This has been witnessed on Multi CPU Machine with HyperThreading
Enabled.
Symptoms:
=========
Takes a couple of minutes to even get the login prompt of ciscoworks,
and
Various java applets just fail to even come up.
Workaround:
===========
In <NMSROOT>\lib\web\conf\httpd.conf
Change :
KeepAlive Off
to
KeepAlive On
Stop and Restart the
Apache WebServer &
JRUNProxyServer
HTW

Subject: OT: CiscoWorks LMS Very Sloooooow!
Folks,
I installed CiscoWorks 2000 LAN Management Solution v2.0 on a Dual
Pentium with 2 Gb RAM. The hardware is above Cisco's hardware
requirements but for some reason, CiscoWorks is very slow. It takes
forever (over 5 minutes) to
bring up the topology services Java applets and other applets. (Gives
me
one
more reason to hate Java.)
Just for completeness; per chance my server was flaky, I installed it on
several different servers with the same slow response. I've search
archives and Cisco.com for an explanation but no luck. I did install
the Java patch (JRE v1.3.1) that came with the distribution CD, but I
get this feeling that I'm missing another patch or something.
Does anybody have the same experience? How did you resolve it?
Joseph
