You're right. Reading through that verbose monster from end-to-end is an
undertaking fraught with mnemonic frustration. I had the same experience
when I read through it earlier this year. Putting aside the rare person
with a photographic memory, I'll have to say that (for most of us) just
sitting down and reading through the Cat 3550 Software Config guide is
not adequate preparation for the lab test, IMHO. A complete reading is a
step in the right direction and after doing this I found that a Catalyst
scenario might strike a chord in my memory. But I still had to spend
many minutes rummaging through the guide for a solution.
You want to be prepared so that you know how to configure a Catalyst
3550 instantly. Or perhaps for the more obscure topics you want to be
able to find the details in the config guide very quickly.
Here's a way that I used. Before my last lab attempt I read through the
Cat 3550 Software Config Guide once again (not the entire thing but as
much as I had time for). But this time I was logged into a pair of Cat
3550s. As I read each chapter I typed in and played with every command I
could. Many topics just don't sink in until you try them. It makes a
real difference.

Actually, I think it's more like 900 pages - I'm on page 762 but I've
already forgotten most of what I've read on pages 1 through 400. :-(

I've got a good background in Routers, but havent gotten my feet to wet
in
switching...

there's still lots for me to cover in routers that I'm not comfortable
with,
but they seem like a lot less of a mountain to climb. My switching
abilities
are almost embarrassing, funny since most people who play with switches
say
that there much easier than routers...
