You do not need FW/IDS for R&S, but you do need IPSEC for your crypto. That
is where the problem lies. The only ENTERPRISE PLUS with IPSEC is version
12.2.1d.
Since no labs have been written with the new features of 12.2, at least that
I have seen yet, it is hard to tell what version you will need. It will
probably be a while before you do see those labs, because the big lab
writers are still using 2500's. Funny how that works.
We could go on and on about this for days.
Bottom line, the 2500 will not give you everything you need to study the new
features of 12.2. If you feel you can get what you need from a 2500, more
power to you and good luck.
