On the contrary, MOST OF the features available in 12.2 were available
in 12.1 and 12.0. Probably what Tony meant to say was that SOME of the
NEW features available in 12.2 are not available on 12.1. (I would be
interested in which specific features he is are referring to. I have the
2500 series 12.2(1d) image (Enterprise-FW-Plus-IPSec-56 feature set)
running at home and it seems to have most of the 12.2 QoS stuff.)

Having been through 3 attempts, my opinion is that spending big bucks
on the latest equipment and lots of time learning all the nuances of
some obscure new feature is not a good investment for passing the exam.
Most of this stuff falls in the same category as ATM: read over the area
in question; rent some rack time for $20 - $50 and you've done enough
studying. Buying a Lightstream 1010 to prepare for the CCIE lab is way
overkill. Same goes for anything a 2500 can't do. It's not worth
investing in high price equipment. You should spend 80% (or more) of
your studying time on the core protocols and 2500s will be just fine for
that effort.

But Tony is quite correct that if you are renting rack time to get VOIP,
ATM, or new 12.2 feature experience, find out what equipment and IOS
feature set they are running before you sign up.

Mark,

One thing to keep in mind when shopping for an online rack rental or
even
looking to purchase your own equipment, with the new 12.2 IOS
requirements,
2500's will not give you most of the features available in 12.2.

A lot of the little rack rental shops out there are still using mostly
2500's and plan on it for some time. Shop smart.
