Did you do a bdebug ppp authenticationb to verify that CHAP was occurring?
Just wondering if therebs anything obvious that webre missing.

I believe the problem you have is the fact that you did NOT configure PPP
authentication. Without authentication, or caller ID (some way to identify
who the call is coming from), R2 will initiate a 2nd call so that it can
respond to the ping.
If you configure ppp authentication on both routers, then R2 will know that
it can respond to the ping on the same B channel that is already up (thus
you can REMOVE the dialer string from R2's dialer map... as a matter of
fact, I'm pretty sure you don't need a dialer map on R2 AT ALL).
