Paul,

If you don't have an RP configured and use sparse-dense mode on the
interface, it uses dense mode. That is why you are able to ping when you
removed the RP configuration. Were you able to ping the RP from the switch?
Check your layer 3 connectivity and try it again. The "Incoming interface:
Null, RPF nbr 0.0.0.0" may be the hint.
