Larry,
Hang in there.
The key to passing seems to be a combination of a broad and deep
knowledge of the IOS along with lots and lots of hands-on practice. You
have to put in the time and I'm sure it's not easy with a family.
I haven't passed the exam myself but I'll have to say I feel I'm getting
very close. During my last attempt I thought it seemed much, much easier
than the previous one - mostly because of all the reading and hands-on
practice I've been doing. But there were a bunch of nuances and details
that got me.
Anyway, note that the CCIE "written" or qualification test is now only 2
hours.
