Absolutely correct, Brian. Although these two protocols are not
compatible, LACP and PAgP are simply dynamic front-ends for the same
underlying technology (etherchannel aka outside the Cisco world as
trunking), and you can turn them off and still force each end to be an
etherchannel/trunk and form an etherchannel/trunk. I recently did this
with a 4507 and an IBM Blade server that has a built-in 4-port switch
that supports 802.3ad/LACP, and managed to make a single 4GB pipe from
the server to the switch.

Also, with newer IOS revisions, the SupIII and IVs on the 4000/4500
switches support LACP, so I'm sure the newer code for the 6500s, 3550s,
etc will also support LACP.

Jim,

I haven't worked with foundry before, but their documentation
says that they support 802.3ad. .3ad uses LACP (Link Aggregation
Control Protocol) to negotiate an "etherchannel". LACP is like PAgP
(Port Aggregation Protocol), but PAgP is Cisco proprietary. Think of it
like ISL vs .1q. As long as a device supports LACP, a Cisco switch can
channel with it.
