Yes, this is happening because VLAN1 doesn't exist in the VLAN database. If
you assign a VTP client switch port to a VLAN that doesn't existant in the
VTP domain, it will show up/up in "show int status", but the light will
appear orange(amber) and there will be no communication to other devices in
the same VLAN. I've used this as sort of a poor man's security. Rather than
shut down the interface, I put it in a non-existant VLAN so that a logging
message will be sent if someone plugs a device into a port that should not
have anything connected. Kinda sneaky.... If you connect another
manufacturer's switch to the 3550 and the 3550's interface is in default
configuration, the two switches will auto-negotiate a dot1q trunk. You can
also verify the trunk with the "show int status" command.
