RE: local-as community attribute - DOC contradictions??? Never!

Dear all;

I have tested that routes with Local-AS community will "not" advertise out
to another sub-AS within confederation, in both 12.0 and 12.2 version IOS.

If the function of Local-AS community is as described as the first link, it
will make no difference as the "no-export" option. So I bind with the
second one.

Thx,
BBD (Big Black Dog)

Point taken...... But what about this URL? This URL is for 12.2T Code! And
it still says the same thing:

http://www.cisco.com/en/US/products/sw/iosswrel/ps1839/products_feature_guide09186a0080087d1d.html#1025967

Quote:

local-as-Send this route to peers in other subautonomous systems within the
local confederation. Do not advertise this route to an external system.

Is this something that Cisco should take note of and sort out?

Daniel,

The local-as feature was instroduced in 12.0. The first link is for the
12.0 ST code and the definition for local-as may be vague at that time.
The
definition on the second link (12.1) is definitely accurate.

I'm trying to nail down exactly what all the "named" communities do in BGP.
All is OK, except for the "local-as" community.

The topic has come up occasionally through the archives, and the general
consensus was that setting routes with the "local-as" comm att would allow
the route to be propagated throughout all sub-as's of a confed.

In fact, I came across a Cisco URL which confirms this:

http://www.cisco.com/en/US/products/sw/iosswrel/ps1612/products_feature_guid

e09186a00800809cf.html#24828

Quote:

local confederation. Do not advertise this route to an external system.

Pretty clear? Yes.

Try it...... I couldn't make this work.......What I saw was the routes
being
propagated only within the local sub AS in the confed !!!!!.

More research revealed the following URL:

http://www.cisco.com/univercd/cc/td/doc/product/software/ios121/121cgcr/ip_r

/iprprt2/1rdbgp.htm#1018677

Quote:
local-as -Do not advertise this route to peers outside the local autonomous
system. This route will not be advertised to other autonomous systems or
sub-autonomous systems when confederations are configured.

Now that's more like what I saw! What ? A contradiction?

Can anyone share their experiences with this feature?

Comments would be very much appreciated

Daniel
