Not a bad analogy, except that I'd say if you went down to 15,000
feet, you'd see it as ATM on steroids. The difference between ATM and
FR is important in that you have to know about the paths you are
setting up in an ATM network, while the FR carrier does it
automagically.
Also, be very, very aware there's lots of control associated with
setting up paths, and the control plane is IP based.

I'm hunting for a very mixed metaphor here, back in the days when I
played duplicate bridge. You have to have very good dummy skills to
play bridge, and maybe that means if you are good at bridge, you can
make the transition to L2 switching.
I stopped playing duplicate when I found the hostility and occasional
bloodshed too much for my soul, and began to look for a kindler,
gentler pursuit...such as English soccer fandom.
As far as the important societal role of a concept close to
dummyhood, idiocy, I refer you to Monty Python on the value of the
Village Idiot. There's a USENET .sig floating around where some guy
tells his wife that the Internet has made the world a village, and
she inquires if he's trying out for Village Idiot.
