(Going off memory here). If I'm not mistaken, on the Cat5000/5500s, you
have a 30 second window after you first get the prompt where you can
login and it either doesn't ask for a password or you can just blank.
But you must hurry as you have 30 seconds to get in and change the
password to something you want.
Check this link:
http://www.cisco.com/warp/public/474/
And click the Catalyst 5500/5000/2926G/2926 Series Switches under LAN
Switches.
So yeah. From the time you see the "password" prompt, you can enter
nothing (just hit Enter) and you have to get into enable mode (again
just hit Enter for the password) then use the 'set password' or 'set
enablepass' and when it prompts you for the old password, just hit
Enter. This will only work for 30 seconds after you get the very first
password prompt, so you need to be ready and on your toes.
HTH,
Mike W.

Subject: Password Recovery on a Catalyst 5500
Ran into something interesting with the company I used to work for, they
have a Cat 5500 that they need to do password recovery on but all the
recovery procedures on CCO ask for the old password. Any suggestions?
Joe
