So I believe you agree that the answer to my question is yes.
If I DON'T enable vtp pruning via the global command, I can still enable vtp
pruning on a trunk by ONLY using the "switchport trunk pruning vlan"
command.
That's my take on it at least.

Yes, you can always enable pruning eligibility, but unless the correct
conditions exist it will not do anything. This means most obviously that
the
vlan must traverse the trunk, either by manual assignment or VTP domain
addition. Then there is the requirement that the vlan not be in use to
be
pruned. Without VTP the existance of the vlan would be via a deliberate
action and would hence override any pruning.
Decision Tree would be - Per Vlan, Per port:
Is VLAN X nailed down (manually configured)
IF NOT then IS VLAN in USE
IF NOT then is VLAN prune-eligible
IF YES, Prune vlan
IF YES, END
IF YES, END
Implicit DO NOT Prune

I read the paragraph below as:
You can turn on pruning on a trunk even if you have vtp pruning disabled
in
global config.
Thoughts?
"You can set VLAN pruning-eligibility, whether or not VTP pruning is
enabled
for the VTP domain, whether or not any given VLAN exists, and whether or
not
the interface is currently trunking."
