The SupIII also runs IOS..... SupI and SupII run CatOS and do Layer2....
SupIII and SupIV run IOS and do Layer2/3 (like 3550 or 6500 running
Native IOS). AFAIK, SupIII and SupIV are virtually identical, but if
you have the 4507 chassis, you need the SupIV to run redundant sups (an
can only use the extra slot for a redundant Sup, not regular line cards
with interfaces, etc). I've only used SupIVs in 4507s, and since that
is the only Sup you can run if you run redundant Sups (and the 4507 is
the only 45xx chassis that will allow that), I'm not sure if you can run
a SupIV in a 4003 or 4006, or even a 4503 or 4506. But we run SupIIIs
in our 4506s and 4006s.

It can if you have the Supervisor iv installed, the layer 3 services
module also runs IOS the other sups use cat os..
