Using 4000 in place of 3550??

I work on 6500s and 4000/4500s (both running SupIII orSupIVs with
Enterprise IOS) and may be able to use a 4006 (Sup III) as the center of
a lab setup. I haven't the chance to use a 3550 (We have some 3548s and
2950s, but neither is the same as the 3550).. But from what I've read,
the 3550 is virtually identical to the IOS on the 4000s because they, by
default, treat each port as a L2 port (as opposed to the 6500s where
every port is, by default, a L3 port and has to be "converted" to a L2
port with the 'switchport' command).

So my question to the group is: Would using a 4000 prepare me the same
for the lab?

Any comments or suggestions are welcome.
