you don't need to take the serial line down.
the answer to this query depends what you mean by test the isdn line
issuing a show isdn status will show you whether the bri telephone is
connected to the telco switch.
the backup interface just disables the bri interface, you still need to
define interesting traffic like in a DDR scenario.
so:
1. remove backup statement from serial interface
2. try this in enable mode; "isdn test call bri 0/0 <your mobile telephone
number or something>"
this would test the isdn line
or if this is unavailable because of your ios feature set, you need to
define interesting traffic and a route that is out of your bri port - try
and ping something should cause it to dial.
this might be helpful: debug dialler

Subject: ISDN circuit test
Groups,
Currently I am using ISDN to back up a primay link failure with " backup
interface bri0" command under serial interface.
#sh int bri0
bri0 is standby mode, line protocol is down
I am looking for a way to test isdn line to see if it works without bringing
down the serial line.
Any help !!!
