The voice vlan will only work with IP phones

This is the discovery process when you plug in an IP phone, hope it
helps

The switch sends a test tone over two wires of Ethernet , and because
the IP phones are looped and have a special filter the switch gets back
the tone,
Now the switch knows it is an IP phone and sends power.
The next is going to be CDP exchange, during that exchange power is
fine-tuned and the voice vlan id is send to the IP phone, that is the
"voice vlan" command. Now the phone knows to taq with 802.1q "5" it's
own traffic and not to tag any traffic from the PC behind it.

Hope it helps

Subject: Voice VLAN

In 3550, there is a Voice VLAN.. what is the difference between Voice
vlan and
the standard vlan?

I just wondering what is the effect differences between

conf t
int f0/0
mls trust cos
switchport voice vlan 5

and

conf t
int f0/0
mls trust cos
switchport vlan 5

Does the voice vlan only for configuring switch with IP Phone 7960?

Is it possible for me to connect 3550 switch port with IPPhone (that
also
connect to PC)... through trunking with with dot1q encapsulatio? how?
What is
the difference with above configuration.

int f0/0
switchport mode trunk
switch trunk dot1q
