OK - a simple explanation is that dot1q tunnels should be used in Provider
type scenarios where you wish to assign a port in a VLAN to a customer and
that customer wishes to use their own VLANS over your Ethernet service. It
means for example that you may assign the access port the customer is in to
vlan 400 and they may wish to assign different vlans to their ports and
trunk this over your network.

Let me know if you would like a more detailed explanation.

Subject: 802.1Q tunneling on Catalyst 3550

Hello All
Can anybody please explain me the 802.1Q tunneling
technology on the Catalyst 3550.
What are its applications?
Where it should be used?

I am kind of new the 3550 switch features and have
never dealt with this tunneling technology.

any info or a brief explanation would be good.

thanks
