KiChul,
On eBay a 2924XL-EN is about $350 and a 3550-EMI is about $2000. There are
some limitations, but for the money, you can learn most of what you need
with one or two 2924XL-ENs.
You can learn VTP domain and modes, VLAN assignments and pruning,
EtherChannel, ISL and 802.1q trunking, spanning-tree issues, and port
security on the 2924XLEN. Also, it is IOS based, so feels the same.
You will not be able to run a routing protocol (e.g., EIGRP, OSPF) or turn
off switchport to convert a port to a routed interface. Also, selecting the
management VLAN is different (much easier on the 3550).
If you're short on cash, my recommendation would be to get one or two
2924XLENs for your home lab to get very familiar with many of the switching
topics, then rent a few hours of on-line rack time somewhere that has 3550s
(e.g., www.6colabs.com or www.bradshawlabs.com). Of course, if you have
plenty of money, you should get 3550s for your home lab.
