Paul,

When you do a show version the serial number that comes up is the serial
number of the motherboard, not the chassis. This has been the topic of
discussion before on this, and there is no way to come up with the serial
number without standing in front of the box.

If you have snmp running on the box you can put the serial number in for
information purposes, but that's after you get that number from the
chassis.
