I have seen this before with some cheap serial cables that don't make a good
contact or the pins bend.

I know this sounds crazy,
but swap the DTE / DCE cable around, and run the clock from the other end.
I had have the same problem on some of my 2500's.
I think the clock drive circuitry can go bad after a while...

line protocol in both the serial interface is keep on going down and up ..
