Bring out yer Failed! ???
I've been looking for information on the Greater Area Network, or Gannet for
short.
I've been to many bookshops and asked the assistants for the one with the
Gannet, but with no-avail!
They say that they've all got the Gannet, it's in all the books. Can't see
for looking.
Can anybody else help?

From an architectural standpoint, your first questions two fall under
the purview of the IETF Sub-IP Temporary Area,
http://www.ietf.org/html.charters/wg-dir.html#Sub-IP%20Area
Probably should be an additional payload type for GMPLS.
Your Question the Third is an implementer decision.
