Lose points for too much config?

I've noticed that in a lot of lab scenarios I'm over-doing the config.
I tend to nail things down a lot and put extra time into bullet proofing
redistribution, etc...

Not looking for NDA stuff, but should I be more careful about slimming
down my config? I'm trying to figure out if this extra stuff stands to
help or hurt me.
