I think this would be a great time and place to speculate about how it might
change the lab. For now, you could speculate about future shapes of lab
diagrams without fear of NDA violation. I think the 3550 EMI could very
well change the entire shape of lab diagrams, because of the multiple router
interfaces made available on each switch. If you think practice labs with
trunked VLANs make for interesting logical diagrams, just imagine what a 12
or 24 port 3550 could do.

I could imagine a situation where one 3550 connects to various routers in
the same way folks who run commercial practice labs now connect all of their
routers, so that you can change which router connects to which merely by
changing the VLAN to port assignments. Some links would be layer 2 links
that would be the same as having a crossover cable betwen the routers, while
other links would be between the switch-acting-as-router and other routers.

I am an advocate of the idea that you can learn most of the important
lessons of routing in cheap lab made up of lots of ridiculously cheap token
ring routers, but this 3550 device threatens to bust that theory. People
will definitely need to rent a lot of rack time on racks with 3550s and
actually do complex scenarios on those rental racks.

Best wishes,
Tom Larus
