OT: Re: What is irc server ?!?!?!?

Guys,
Please forgive me if this sounds harsh, but I have two small gripes about the list
recently. Take 'em or leave 'em. If you get your panties in a bunch easily, stop reading
here|

Gripe #1:
This list gets a considerable amount of "junk" email messages and others where 30 people
answer the same simple question because they don't first check the entire thread to see
if others have already answered. Please, please... go through your entire inbox before
you answer a question, because chances are, others have already answered it. You will not
catch the old timers on this list answering every single question (even though they
undoubtedly know the answer, because they realize this). The idea is to be considerate of
everyone who has to read all this stuff and also has a limited time budget.

Gripe #2:
Before you ask a very straightforward and general question like "What is IRC", please,
please, check these four places first:
1) google.com
2) webopedia.com
3) cisco.com
4) groupstudy.com (archives)

This mail list is intended for CCIE -level candidates who have already passed the written
exam. While I know this is not enforced (should be in my mind), at least respect the
other members enough not to wast time, synapses, internet bandwidth, and precious free
web-mail space ;-) on these easily found questions. I shudder to think anyone who has
passed the CCNA/CCNP/CCIE Written would not know what IRC is. A good CCIE candidate would
probably never ask something before trying to find the answer himself, especially
something relatively straightforward and not arcane in any way. Most of us are too proud
to admit we don't know something, but this serves as a benefit and keeps this list of
10,000+ members manageable. I know most computer users these days think the world wide
web IS the internet, but don't let one of us old BBS sysops catch you asking what gopher,
whois, finger, or IRC means.

If I have offended anyone with this email, I apologize. I'm just trying to share my own
opinion about how we can keep this list more efficient and more useful to everyone. Those
who understand will not be offended, those who are offended don't understand. But please
yell at me off-line.

Peace,
Jake
