My understanding of IRB is as follows:

1. It is designed to allow several bridged interfaces to route their traffic
across to routed interfaces.
2. Normally, 2 or more interfaces are put in the bridge-group (not much reason
to have a bridge group otherwise). A BVI interface is then created to gather
the bridged interfaces under one IP umbrella. The BVI interface appears to all
other routed interfaces as another routed interface.
3. If you create a BVI, the IP address for that group of bridged interfaces
should be on the BVI, not an individual interface.
4. The "bridge x route IP" command tells the BVI to route IP between itself
(the bridgegroup) and other routed interfaces.
