better but on router it shows that higher preference is preferred.

khalid

R4(config-if)#ip irdp pre
R4(config-if)#ip irdp preference ?
<-2147483648 - 2147483647> preference for this address (higher values

Gents,

I know it is confusing, but according to the following examples from Doco CD
I guess 50 is better than 100 (it wasn't a typo)

http://127.0.0.1:8080/cc/td/doc/product/software/ios121/121cgcr/ip_r/iprprt1
/1rdipadr.htm#xtocid503326

Examples

The following example sets the various IRDP processes:

! enable irdp on interface Ethernet 0
interface ethernet 0

 ip irdp

! send IRDP advertisements to the multicast address
 ip irdp multicast

! increase router preference from 100 to 50
 ip irdp preference 50

! set maximum time between advertisements to 400 secs
 ip irdp maxadvertinterval 400

! set minimum time between advertisements to 100 secs
 ip irdp minadvertinterval 100

! advertisements are good for 6000 seconds
 ip irdp holdtime 6000

! proxy-advertise 131.108.14.5 with default router preference
 ip irdp address 131.108.14.5

! proxy-advertise 131.108.14.6 with preference of 50
 ip irdp address 131.108.14.6 50

If any body has any other clarifacarions, be glad to hear them.

Cheers

Yakout

Don't you mean that 50 is worse that 100.....

I just finished up a ccie lab workshop and this was one of the tested
subjects.

IRDP is defaulted to 0,with 1 being better and -1 being worse....

Thanks

Larry

The difference lies on the host. If the host is a Windows PC then it
preferes the higher preference (just like cisco routers)

If it was Unix host it will go for lower preference.

But definetely cisco routers prefer the higher preferenec, ie. 50 is better
than 100

Hi Fellas,

Did we finally decide what the correct config is for this one?

CD says higher preference is better, many of our labs say lower preference
is the primary gateway.

Does anyone know what the final word is on this please?

TIA,
