Hi all
Auto-RP Issues with NBMA Mode
Mapping Agent (MA)
Use the following guidelines when placing the MA in your network:
1.All candidate RPs must be connected to the MA.
2.All MAs must be connected to all PIM routers.
If you check the title of this section, it means for nbma mode !
NBMA Mode is used for hub and spoke topology.
As i understand multicast, an multicast Interface will only join a multicast
group if there is a multicast server connected witch send multicast traffic
to a certain group address or if you put the join group command on the
interface.
I have setup this scenario in my lab and it works fine, i have put the MA
once in the middle and on the second try at the "HQ" router. In both
scenarios the "state" router learns the RP from the HQ router.
A common mistake is if you forgot to put the "broadcast" keyword on
frame-maps you can verify with show ip igmp neighbors on ALL routers,
however i would put the MA in the middle of those routers.
Your config is OK, when you see the rp on the regional and the state router.
1. Go to state router and ping your group address.
2. Type show ip pim rp
If you see the rp mapping than its ok
Hope this helps
cheers
Louis

I guess in your case it should be at the Regional router.

Hi guys
I have problem in my multicast lab for the Auto-RP scenario:
-----------e0--HQ--s0------------------------s0--Regional--s1-----------
---- -----s1--State--e0---------------------------Only HQ router will join a multicast group which is 224.10.10.1 on e0 interface Cannot use static RP statement on all the routers HQ router also is the RP for 224.10.0.0/16 group At the end of the lab, State router should be able to ping both multicast group.
My config is as the below:
HQ router:
ip multicast-routing
int lo0 ip pim sparse-d
int e0 ip pim sparse-d ip igmp join 224.10.10.1
int s0 ip pim sparse-d
ip pim send-rp-announce lo0 scope 32 group-list 1 ip pim send-rp-discovery lo0 scope 32
access 1 per 224.10.0.0 0.0.255.255
Regional router:
ip multicast-routing
int lo0 ip pim sparse-d
int s0 ip pim sparse-d
int s1 ip pim sparse-d
State router:
ip multicast-routing
int lo0 ip pim sparse-d
int s1 ip pim sparse-d
int e0 ip pim sparse-d
Problem:
1. At State router, I cannot see the Auto-RP and the Mapping Agent 2. I can't ping 224.10.10.1 but I can ping it from the Regional router
Can you guys help me to find out the problem? My IOS is 12.1c and maybe that is the problem. This suppose should be a very straight forward configuration.
Thanks.
Best regards,
William
