Good one. My curiosity got the better of me and I just had to look.
Apparently it's used in large-scale dialout situations where you are not
downloading static routes periodically from a AAA server. From the 12.2 Dial
Tech. Cmd. Ref.:
"The user profile name is passed to an AAA server as the next hop for large
scale dial-out, and is the name argument with the -out suffix appended. The
suffix is automatically supplied and is required since dial in and user
profile names must be unique."
"In the following example, the user profile named macarthur-out will be
retrieved from the AAA:
ip route 10.0.0.0 255.255.255.255 Dialer0 name macarthur"
The user profile might contain additional information such as the outbound
dial number, etc.

Subject: ip route [name] option
Hello, everyone. Is anyone out there aware of the function of the
"name" option on an IP route?
Syntax: ip route 1.0.0.0 255.0.0.0 2.2.2.2 name OutThere
Is it simply a comment option like access-list remarks (I'm hoping so),
or is it a form of authentication (next hop router's hostname must match
the "name" in the command), or some other function that I'm missing?
Thank you,
Greg Posey Jr.
