Louis,

If the instructions are not specific, you can use either method; the
important thing is that it must work. It if *IS* specified to use HSRP or
floating static routes, then of course, use the method they specify.

By the way, if you have multiple clients behind the switch, you can use two
standby groups on R1 and R2 (group 1 having higher priority on R1 and group
2 having higher priority on R2) to load balance the default gateways of all
those clients and still providing a backup gateway for each group.
