Spontaneous loopback mode on serial interface???

Hello,

While doing some dial-backup scenarios I just noticed something
interesting... If I physically disconnect the serial cable connecting a
router to a 4000 acting as frame switch, the 4000's serial interface goes
in loopback mode by itself, and remains so even after reconnection... Had
me scratching my head for a little while until I noticed the yellow LP
light on the 4000.

I searched on CCO regarding that behaviour, to no avail. Is that an
undocumented "feature"?
