Why does trace ipx work and not ping?

I have had this happen before, but with IP. I cannot ping, but I can trace
route. This time it is with ipx.

I am hoping someone will say something like, "Yes, that happens pretty
commonly when you have a situation where ....." Could just plain bridging
(not IRB) have any impact on this?
