Tom,
Singlemode vs multimode fiber have various distance and speed capabilities
depending on what protocol you are pushing through them (Ethernet, FDDI,
ATM, etc.). Multimode is generally used for short distances while
singlemode is used for longer distances. To connect the two together
usually requires a media converter.
