OK,

First off there are 2 type's of FTP, active and passive. Im not going into a
dissertation on those as that information is widely available on the web.

TCP 21 is used as the control channel. This is were are the commands are
transferred.
TCP 20 is the data channel ( hence ftp-data ). When you ftp to a site and do
an dir, the dir command is sent over the control channel, the actual
directory Is sent back over the data channel.

I have not done it justice so I would highly recommend a search on google.
It will provide you with the nitty gritty that you need.

Thanks

Larry
