The other thing you can do is crimp up a simple ethernet loopback cable that
basically connects the RX and TX pins. You would just loop 1 to 3 and 2 to
6.

Tom, the msg. usually indicates that you have not connected
your Ethernet
port to anything (switch/hub/pc/another router etc). There
are 3 things you
could do..
* no keepalive (but you said it doesnt work)
* shut down the port
* connect the port to switch/hub/pc/router etc.
