It really depends, here is a good link for this sort of stuff.

However, if you are going to do a really long Metro fiber link, and fiber is an
 issue, I would look at DWDM over running a straight GIG link. Current DWDM im
pementations allow for up to 80GB across a single fiber pair. If you need more
 info let me know.

network that's running GigE over fiber? (I believe the nomenclature is
