Hi ,
I have done this before and what i have observed is if you configure multiple d
efault routes, it will load balance on these links in a round-robin fashion if
there is no specific route to a destination, for all the packets originating fr
om this router.

Thats becoz all packets originating from the router are by default process swit
ched while packets transiting through the router will be fast switched by defau
lt.

So when you test this by doing a trace from the router it will load balance but
at the same time if you trace from another device behind the router you will s
ee that it doesnt load balance since it is being fast switched.

Regards
John

Subject: Two Default Routes which path?

If I have say a 25xx router or any router with two serial interfaces, and I
put a default route say

ip route 0.0.0.0 0.0.0.0 serial 0
ip route 0.0.0.0 0.0.0.0 serial 1

What will happen to the packets if there is no route in the table? Will
they all go down the first default route? Will the packets alternate based
on sessions?

Amazing how many smart people with lots of experience I have asked that do
not know the answer to this question including myself!

Thanks,

David
