This is a know problem with keeping any computer hooked to the console
port of a 2900 series switch while booting Windows NT and 2000, not sure
about XP. When windows is trying to determine if a mouse or modem is
connected to that com port it will do something that will cause the
switch to go to never never land.

The moral of the story is to unhook the console cable from the computer
before you boot the system.

Subject: OT: Cisco 2900 Switch Lockup

Hey folks:

This is a bit off topic but I am unable to find any information on this.
I
experienced, on a few occasions now, a Cisco 2912/24 switch actually
lock up
(all lights solid) when the console cable is attached from a laptop to
the
switch console port. I have tried several sequences on starting up the
laptop, making the connection with the console cable and firing up the
application (usually Hyper Terminal, Tera Term Pro or Secure CRT) but
without discovering a pattern. Now a new twist, yesterday while consoled
into a 2924 my laptop went into standby and caused the switch to lock
up.
Once the switch has lockup the only remedy to getting the switch back up
is
to power cycle the device. One side note: this has happed with different
laptops (same manufacture, different models).

I'm curious if anyone else has experienced this problem and what they
have
done to avoid it. Since this is not directly CCIE material please
respond to
me directly at dmatheson@charter.net

TIA,

David
