Re: RP in a nutshell

In a simplistic view:

Sparse mode does away with flooding and there is no inherent pruning
because of it. So the RP or Rendevouz Point is used as a way to register
sources and clients. So the RP knows about everything. This saves a lot
of bandwidth.

You can have the RP advertised automatically or you can statically map
the RP. Either way, sparse mode is usually the best and most efficient
way to do multicast.

Be careful with AUTORP and Mapping Agents and SPARSE ONLY mode. You need
to remember that the *,g for the RP announce and MA announce (I forget
if both or one of them now) is in dense mode so you need a way to get
the message across. YOu either do sparse-dense or do BOOTSTRAP protocol.
Or of course static map.

Read up on these topics to get more familiar with it. The Cisco Docs for
IOS 12.1 have excellent examples of any multicast scenario you are
likely to encounter.

Good luck.
