No auto wouldn't apply as this is an EBGP connection.
I did the same thing you are doing and it worked either way. I used a
loopback with an address of 14.1.1.0/24:
Remember you need to reset the BGP session or enable soft
reconfigurations for the advertisement change to take effect.
This works only because I have left the default auto-summ. Reenable
auto-summ and it should work
