Ed,
You got it exact opposite, By default ospf redistributes external route as
type 2 not type 1, Type 2 is a route where the the metric of the network
remains same throughout the network. If you have more than one ASBR in a
ospf domain, then it makes sense redistributing the external networks as
type 1 since then all the ospf routers will have two paths to reach the
external networks (through each asbr) depending upon the least metric they
will take the better path, In case if you have only one ASBR in ospf domain
then it makes sense redistributing into as type 2 since all the routers have
only one way to external networks, they don't need metric to compare the
best path.
